Are you ready to boost your running game this spring? Mark your calendars for the Algarve Spring Running Camp, back for another exhilarating session from March 8-15 and 15-22, 2025. Organised by 2:09 Events, this is the UK’s largest and longest-running endurance running camp, and it promises a week full of valuable training experiences against the stunning backdrop of sunny Falesia, Portugal.
Why join the 2:09 Events: Algarve Spring Running Camp?
Imagine waking up to warm spring weather, lacing up your running shoes, and heading out for a morning jog along picturesque routes. That’s just the start of the Algarve Spring Running Camp experience. From daily running sessions to rejuvenating yoga classes, the camp is a haven for runners seeking expert coaching and a community atmosphere.
You’ll have the opportunity to train with experienced coaches, learning new techniques and strategies to improve your running performance. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced runner, the camp caters to all levels and offers tailored training plans for each individual’s goals and abilities.
But it’s not just about training – the Algarve Spring Running Camp is also about exploring a beautiful destination with like-minded individuals. Along with daily runs, there will be excursions to nearby towns and beaches, as well as social events in the evenings. It’s a great way to meet new people who share your passion for running while discovering the culture of Portugal.
Warmer than England!
Let’s face it, the weather in England during spring can be unpredictable and often not ideal for outdoor training. The Algarve, on the other hand, boasts mild temperatures and sunny skies during this time of year – perfect for running! You’ll also have the chance to train on different terrains, including beach runs and hill repeats, adding diversity to your training routine. Plus, who wouldn’t want a bit of sunshine after a long winter?
March is the perfect time to visit Falesia. You’ll have plenty of sunshine and pleasant temperatures for your runs, without the intense heat that can make training difficult. Plus, with the stunning scenery and peaceful atmosphere, it’s easy to see why Falesia is a popular destination for runners.
All runners welcome
It doesn’t matter if you’ve just started running your first 5K or if you’re a marathon veteran. the camp caters to all skill levels and ensures every runner feels welcomed and supported. No matter your running level, you’ll be astonished at the progress you can achieve in just one week of focused training with a supportive coaching team and fellow runners like yourself. One of last year’s participants even went on to win the Brighton Marathon shortly after the camp!
So whether you’re looking to build a solid running foundation or aiming to reach new personal bests, the Algarve Spring Running Camp is the perfect setting for achieving your goals. The camp offers two running sessions a day plus afternoon yoga, pilates or core-fitness sessions, as well as evening seminars, talks and social events. You can do as much or as little as you like. There are no compulsory sessions; everything is open to everyone, so just pick and choose what you want to do.
The camp
The camp operates on a straightforward but effective formula: warm spring weather, diverse running routes, a welcoming atmosphere, and a team of expert, enthusiastic coaches. It’s no surprise that the 2:09 Events Spring Training Camp has become the largest and most successful overseas running camp for UK athletes.
With a maximum of 90 participants per week, the Algarve Spring Running Camp offers an intimate and personalised experience. The camp aims to enhance your running skills, whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced athlete.
The structured programme provides a balanced schedule throughout the week. Most days feature two training sessions: an easy run in the early morning and a quality session in the late afternoon. In between, you’ll find stretching, yoga, pilates, or core fitness classes. Evenings are reserved for engaging talks, presentations, or group dinners. You have complete freedom to participate as much or as little as you wish. With no mandatory sessions, everything is available to everyone, allowing you to pick and choose activities that interest you.
Here’s a sample schedule to give you an idea of what to expect each day at the camp throughout the week.

Hotel and location
The Algarve Spring Running Camp takes place in the beautiful coastal town of Falesia, in southern Portugal. The camp’s base is the Victoria Beach and Sport Resort which is the perfect place for a training camp. The hotel’s private garden boasts a running track that is frequently used for afternoon sessions. On the opposite side, you’ll find a cross-country course that has hosted world-class events and is perfect for interval or hill training. Just a five-minute walk away lies a three-mile stretch of beach leading to Vilamoura’s port, as well as scenic cliff tops ideal for morning runs. In the other direction, you’ll pass a honey farm and orange groves that signal the start of another early morning circuit. The area offers diverse running routes in every direction, featuring roads, hard-packed trails, grass, and beach terrain.
The hotel features a fully equipped gym, tennis courts, and a leisure pool. A buffet breakfast is included with your booking, but you have the option to upgrade to a fully inclusive package, which covers lunch, dinner, and all beverages, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.

The hotel offers apartment-style rooms, each featuring a bedroom, bathroom, living room, fully equipped kitchen, and balcony. This setup is ideal for guests who prefer self-catering, as they can easily purchase groceries from nearby supermarkets. Additionally, a variety of cafes and restaurants are within walking distance. The atmosphere in this modern hotel is relaxed and laid-back, with sports attire being the norm. Feel free to join the other guests who casually head to breakfast right after their morning run.
Surrounding area
The Algarve region offers plenty of activities and attractions for runners to enjoy outside of the camp. Nearby towns and beaches are easily accessible by foot or bike, making it easy to explore the area during your free time.
For those interested in history and culture, a visit to nearby towns like Faro, Tavira, or Lagos is a must. These charming cities are filled with historic architecture and traditional Portuguese charm. For some adventure and adrenaline, activities such as surfing, kayaking, and scuba diving are available along the coast.
If you prefer a more relaxing experience, there are also several beautiful beaches perfect for sunbathing and swimming. The camp’s location in Falesia is known for its stunning red cliffs and golden sand beaches, making it an ideal spot to soak up some sun and ocean views.
The Algarve also boasts a vibrant food scene with fresh seafood being a staple. Be sure to try out some local dishes at the various restaurants in the area, or even take part in a cooking class to learn how to make traditional Portuguese meals.
There are countless places to explore when you’re not running or lounging on the beach!
Coaching team
The Algarve Spring Running Camp boasts a team of expert coaches ready to guide and assist you in achieving your running goals. Each coach has a wealth of experience in the running world and is passionate about helping others improve their performance. They provide personalised advice and support, as well as lead training sessions and give informative talks on various topics such as injury prevention, nutrition, and race strategy.
The coaches also foster a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable pushing themselves to reach new heights.

MIKE GRATTON
Since 1984, Coach the Run’s very own Mike Gratton has been organising training camps in the Algarve. This was a year after his remarkable victory at the London Marathon, clocking in at 2:09:43 – a time that later inspired the name of his travel company, 2:09 Events. Although Mike remains a director of 2:09 Events, he now dedicates most of his time to his own coaching business, where he mentors runners ranging from absolute beginners to seasoned internationals. As one of the primary coaches, he will work under the guidance of head coach Mara Yamauchi.
MARA YAMAUCHI
Since 2018, Mara has led our training camp as head coach. Her exceptional running credentials speak for themselves: she holds the title of the UK’s second-fastest female marathon runner, thanks to her impressive 2:23 finish at the London Marathon in 2012, following a 6th place finish at the Beijing Olympics. Mara now coaches a diverse group of runners and is active in the media as both a commentator and spokesperson on various topics. She will lead all the running sessions, supported by the two Mikes and Jenny.
MIKE BANNISTER
At 30, Mike began his running journey by joining the Brighton and Hove Athletics Club. Today, he owns and manages RunBrighton, a comprehensive online resource for runners in the Brighton and Hove area, often sending participants to training camps. As a qualified England Athletics coach, Mike trains a diverse group of athletes, from beginners to elite competitors. His personal story is humorously captured in his book, “Running for the B-Team,” where he recounts his quest to achieve a sub-three-hour marathon. Mike will be assisting the other coaches during one of the training weeks.
Alongside this core coaching team, a dedicated physio or masseur will be available each week of the camp to address any minor injuries or discomforts that could hinder your full participation. Additionally, extra 2:09 Events staff will be on hand to assist with airport transfers and general logistics.
What’s new for 2025?
The Algarve Spring Training Camp is expanding back to two weeks in 2025, after scaling down to just one week in 2024. The demand for that single week was extraordinary, and they managed to accommodate over 110 participants. For next year, they will limit the camp to 90 runners per week, and they anticipate another sell-out event. If you want to join the UK’s longest-running and largest endurance running camp in 2025, don’t hesitate to secure your spot!
